How to Test and Replace a Car Battery at Home
Quick multimeter checks
- Resting voltage (engine off, sitting a few hours): about 12.6 V usually indicates a full charge, and around 12.2 V is roughly half charge.
- Charging voltage (engine running): typically about 13.5–14.7 V. Outside that range, check the alternator and connections.
- Voltage alone can't show capacity. A load or conductance tester gives a better health check.
Replacing it
- Note your radio/security codes. A memory saver is optional.
- Disconnect negative first, then positive.
- Remove the hold-down, swap the battery, and clean the terminals.
- Connect positive first, then negative. Tighten to spec.
- Some vehicles need a battery registration step with a scan tool.
- Return the old battery for its core/recycling.
