Floor Jack and Jack Stands Guide: Lift Your Car Safely

A jack lifts the car. Stands hold it up. Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Choosing a floor jack

Choosing jack stands

Safe lifting procedure

  1. Work on flat, solid ground (not asphalt on a hot day, and not gravel). Put the car in park or in gear, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels opposite the end you're lifting.
  2. Use the lift points shown in your owner's manual.
  3. Lift, place the stands at the specified support points, then lower the car onto the stands.
  4. Shake-test the car before you go under it.
